Jon Rahm completed his US Open appearance at Shinnecock Hills on six over par after two contrasting rounds of 68 and 78. The 2021 champion finished two shots outside the cut line, which was set at +4, and was unable to compete over the weekend.

The final outcome should not overshadow Jon’s exceptional performance in the opening round. The Barrika golfer completed the demanding Shinnecock Hills course in 68 shots, two under par, without making a single bogey.

It was the first bogey-free competitive round recorded at the venue since 2004 and the first in the last 753 scorecards completed there in competition.

Rahm built the round on tremendous solidity, recording two birdies and 16 pars at one of the most demanding venues in American golf. The most spectacular moment came at the par-three 17th, his eighth hole of the day after starting from the tenth tee.

Jon holed a 61-foot putt —more than 18 metres— to move into a share of the championship lead at that point.

Thursday provided an impressive display of control, patience and accuracy. Jon consistently placed the ball in the correct positions, avoided the major mistakes that so often determine the outcome of a US Open and finished the day near the top of a leaderboard filled with former Major champions.

The second round developed very differently. Rahm was unable to find the same level of consistency, and a particularly difficult spell during the second half of his round moved him away from the cut line. His 78, eight over par, took his total to +6 and brought his participation in the third Major of the season to an end.

The result interrupted an unusually strong recent record in the championship. Jon had finished inside the top 12 in each of his previous four US Open appearances: champion at Torrey Pines in 2021, 12th at The Country Club in 2022, tenth at Los Angeles Country Club in 2023 and seventh at Oakmont in 2025.

It was not the result Jon was looking for after placing himself in such a promising position on Thursday, but his opening round remained one of the most impressive performances of the week.

Completing Shinnecock Hills without a bogey demonstrated the level his game can reach on the most demanding stages and provided a positive reference on which to continue building.

The US Open ended earlier than Jon would have wanted, but it also produced a historic scorecard. His opening 68 confirmed that Rahm retains all his ability to contend in Major championships and produce his finest golf when every shot requires precision, strategy and patience.

It had to be at his beloved Torrey Pines. In San Diego. There couldn’t have been a more special place for Jon Rahm to undergo the most important win of his career to date. He won the 121st edition of the US Open Championship.

Jon accomplished this enormous feat and won this MAJOR at just 26 years old, on his twentieth attempt. He pulled it off for the first time he made it to the final holes with options to win one of these major events. That’s where he left his mark as champion.

Rahm won with the final round of his dreams. He handed in the best card of the day, 67 shots, and took home the victory with a total final score of six under par. He started the day off by sending a message out to all of his rivals, setting the tone. He made birdies on the 1st and 2nd holes. I am here, and I came to win. Shortly after, he shot his only bogey of the day, on the 4th, and from there on out, a truly fantastic version of his game unfolded. He created many options for birdie, but he couldn’t quite follow through, until the 9th hole, with a legendary third shot, which landed just over a meter away from the hole.

Jon was playing really well, but he saved the best for last. He made two epic birdies on the 17th and 18th holes, sinking two very delicate putts, with very downward slopes, calm and collected, beautiful, exhilarating. Two putts that will go down in history in the US Open. He did it Tiger Woods style, with the same position of the flag, landing, of course, the birdie on the 18th. Because that’s how Rahm always does things, all in.

The golfer from Barrika will go down in history, once again, after becoming the fourth (different) Spaniard to win a Major, and the first to win a US Open. He joined the winners circle with Seve Ballesteros, Jose María Olazábal and Sergio García, but he left his special mark. Spanish golf has never reached these heights. It’s the ninth Major for Spain.

This victory, dreamed of and sought out by Jon, is another enormous leap forward in his career, a huge step. He has now recovered the Number 1 spot in the world, he’s first in the Race to Dubai in the European Tour and second in the FedEx Cup. Jon pulled it all off in the company of his wife, Kelley, their son, Kepa, and his parents, Edorta and Ángela. It couldn’t have been a happier ending, although the truth is, the sensation we’re left with is that this story is only just beginning. Legend, Jon.

Jon Rahm kicked off the season with the US Open Championship, another atypical event in this strange year 2020, marked by the pandemic. The postponement of the tournament from its habitual date in June to September, due to Covid-19, is why the tournament is taking place at such an unusual time.

The spotlight this week was on Winged Foot, the New York course that hosted this year’s Major, which gave the golfers a run for their money. So much so, that the winner, Bryson DeChambeau, managed to finish under par after all four days.

It was a dicey week of ups and downs for Rahm. He was off to a great start, with a round of 69 shots, which put him first in line for the top spots, exactly four shots from the leader. The second day, he resisted the course’s wrath, which grew more and more fierce. He shot a 72 on a day in which only three players shot under par. In reality, he was holding his ground well, with his sights still set on the top positions. In fact, at that point in time, he was only four shots away from the tournament leader.

In the third round was where he lost the most ground. It was not a good day. He only made one birdie, and shot a 76, which made things very tight, not much room to work with. He was practically left without options to win. Even so, loyal to his warrior instinct, Rahm went all in on the last round. He shot a 73, and moved up a few spots. A double bogey on the 18th hole kept him from finishing higher up in the rankings. He ended up in 23rd place, four shots from the top ten. It wasn’t his dream week, but by no means a bad one, up against a very narrow course, with a horrific rough, and firm, fast greens.

Jon Rahm (-7) had a fantastic week in the US Open, held in Pebble Beach, where American golfer, Gary Woodland, took home the victory.

The golfer from Barrika handed in four cards under par with a total of 69, 70, 70 and 68 shots, and he finished in third place. This is his best ranking in a Major, his fourth top ten and his third top five in different Majors, after finishing in fourth place in the Masters 2018 and the PGA Championship 2018. Jon is constantly growing as a professional, and continually moving up in the golf world.

It was a really good week. He was in the fight for the win from beginning to end. He started off with lots of momentum, with three birdies on the first three holes of the tournament. That was his staggering presentation letter. He finished high up in the rankings on Thursday, setting the standard for a high-quality game of golf.

The second day, he had some issues, he started off with a few bogeys on the first few holes, but he knew how to turn things around, twofold, to take back the power, beat the course and to maintain his spot in the hot zone. Pebble Beach got tough over the weekend, but Jon knew how to keep his cool, playing under par, once again, to eventually lead him to take home that astounding third place prize. More proof to the power behind the Basque golfer’s game, and that being said even after not having had his best week on the par putts.

It’s also true that he never had a real chance at winning on Sunday, seeing as how Woodland had a very solid game and ended up with -13, but he never turned his back on the tournament, and he wasn’t far off from finishing in the double digits. This US Open serves as a pillar of reinforcement for Jon to fall back on after having missed the last two cuts, consecutively, in the PGA Bethpage and the Charles Schwab at Colonial. As it turns out, the break did wonders for him in the end.

Jon set himself up nicely for his top 5 Grand Slam. He’ll have to finish in the top five in the Open Championship one month from now at Royal Portrush in order make it.

In the meantime, Jon will play next at home, in Spain, the Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters.

He’s moved up two spots in the world rankings, now in eleventh place, once again on the brink of the top ten.

It wasn’t the dream week Rahm had hoped for at Shinnecock Hills. He did not make the cut in the US Open after shooting a 78 on Thursday and a 77 on Friday.

The golfer from Barrika was not able to bring out the best version of his game against the tough conditions of the Long Island course. Off the tee and, especially with the irons to green, he was not nearly as accurate and precise as he usually is, and those slip-ups on this type of extremely difficult course come at a high price.

Simply put, things didn’t go as hoped for this week, although he maintained a good attitude. Jon did not give up at any point in time and kept fighting, even when the cut was already unreachable. Jon just couldn’t establish a point at which he could make a good comeback in the tournament. He needed more executions, seeing as how the putter wasn’t exactly helpful either, which is critical at that level of difficulty.

For example, in the second round he did not make any birdies, truly an anomaly in his career. In fact, since he went pro, this is only the third round in which he did not make a single birdie; the other two were in the Memorial Tournament last year in the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.

It’s the second cut he’s missed of the majors, together with the US Open at Erin Hills last year. However, there’s still a positive message to take home. He’s played eight majors and has made it all the way through the weekend in six of them.

In any event, there’s no other option than to keep moving forward, to learn as much as possible from this week, and to focus on the upcoming tournaments. The next event will be the Open de France Tour, held on the same course that will host the finals of the Ryder Cup.

Despite the logical disappointment from this week’s outcome, Rahm is not one to dwell on his mistakes. He has his sights set on the future. “I missed the cut in the US Open last year as well, and afterwards I won the Irish Open, then missed the cut at Valderrama, and ended up winning in Dubai to finish out the year. It’s ok, that’s golf, one bad week, nothing more”, he assures. Competitors, beware.

During a time in which every week there’s a new tournament, a new course and a different situation, Jon Rahm can say this time that he’ll go into it with the upper hand, and although it won’t be easy by any means, he knows the terrain quite well.

Rahm will start in the US Open Championship this Thursday. It will be the second time in his career, his first as a professional, after his exceptional debut last year at Oakmont where he finished among the top 25, a solid performance.

This week he’ll attempt to do the same at Erin Hills. His game plan isn’t a secret. Following the plan to a tee (No pun intended) requires persistence and for Jon to believe in his golf. Easy to say, tough to execute.

Erin Hills will make its own debut in the US Open and anything could happen. It’s a course on which the most important factor is to catch the fairway and the further the better, because it’s a really long course and an incredibly tricky rough. Thus, it seems as though all things considered, the conditions will favor Rahm’s sensational long game.

Jon has had a busy week, as it always is with a major, but not too bad. He took it easy. He played nine holes each day so that he would go into the tournament well-rested and well-prepared for the challenge that awaits him at the US Open. “I feel good, positive energy and good vibes. I’m going to focus on what I like about the course. Just have to get the drive on the fairway and then it will be a good week”, he assures just a few hours before starting the tournament.

Rahm will play in one of the first games of the day this Thursday with Hideki Matsuyama and Rickie Fowler starting at 7:51 am local time, 2:51 pm in Spain.

Jon Rahm has announced his schedule for upcoming tournaments on his official Twitter account @JonRahmpga. The Spanish golfer from Barrika disclosed the next five events he will attend, which are all the tournaments he will participate in, up until the US Open in Erin Hills (Wisconsin), second major of the season.

Rham will play in the Wells Fargo Championship next week, held on the Eagle Point Golf Club course in Wilmington, North Carolina. This course will substitute the headquarters where the tournament is usually held, because Quail Hollow is preparing for the PGA Championship in August.

Next week, Rham will play in the Wells Fargo, one of the biggest events of the season, apart from the majors. It’s the PLAYERS Championship, emblematic tournament of the PGA Tour held at the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. This will be the first year after major renovations that it will be held on this course.

After THE PLAYERS, Jon will take a week off, just before the next two tournaments: the DEAN & DELUCA Invitational, at the Colonial Country Club (Texas), and the Jack Nicklaus Memorial Tournament, in Muirfield Village (Ohio).

After those two tournaments, Rahm will rest again for one week, and then he’ll play in the US Open. This time around, the Spanish golfer prefers to go into it after a week’s break, the opposite of what he did before the Masters at Augusta. He played the two previous weeks and admitted that he was tired by the end of the week.

It’s his first year in the PGA Tour and he is learning and trying different things in order to figure out the best strategy to go into the big events of the season in the best possible state.
