Jon Rahm will compete in THE PLAYERS Championship starting this Thursday, the most important tournament on the regular PGA Tour calendar, the quintessential event, referred to as the ‘Fifth Major’.

The tournament will be held at the Stadium Course at the TPC Sawgrass, also the PGA Tour headquarters. It’s the big PGA Tour party, and the third time Rham has received an ‘invitation’.

His performance in this tournament in previous years has been marked by ups and downs, although the final score has resulted in more frustration than satisfaction. Both in 2017 and 2018, he got off to an explosive start, both rounds below 68 shots, a sensational score on the demanding Pete Dye course, where it’s no easy task to finish below a 70.

However, the weekend through him off course both times, especially in the third round. The first time around he shot an 82, and last year he shot a 78. Up until that moment, on both occasions he was in the fight for the win. Perhaps that’s why Jon has a personal vendetta, so to speak, against this tournament.

It’s no secret that the golfer from Barrika likes this course a lot, it adapts to his understanding of the game, and he believes the change in date could be to his advantage. For the first time since 2007, it will be held in March instead of May. “It will be cold, and the course will be damper, softer and longer. I think that could be to my advantage”, assures the Basque golfer.

And as if it were lacking in incentives, Jon will play in the first two rounds alongside Sergio García and Dustin Johnson, Number 1 in the world. Time for a very special week.

Jon Rahm took a step forward this year in the PLAYERS Championship. It wasn’t the dream week he had imagined, but he played better than in 2017 and most of all, he walked away having learned several lessons that will allow him to go into the tournament better equipped for the battle in the future.

The golfer from Barrika finished the Fifth Major with an accumulated total of three under par, after turning in three cards under par on Thursday, Friday and Sunday (68, 70 and 70) and one card over par on Saturday (77). Once again, the third day took a toll on him, although he managed to stay afloat to make it past the second cut of the week, ending on a good note. He finished in 63rd place.
Rahm learned a lot this week. He is starting to feel more and more comfortable every time with the Bermuda greens on the Stadium Course at Sawgrass, although it was difficult at first to get used to the speed. He also discovered paths from the tee that allow him to be more aggressive, but always under control, for future years. For example, on the 16th hole, where he hit the ball the farthest off the tee in the whole week this Sunday, left him in a good position to attack the green.

Jon finished THE PLAYERS with an excellent output of birdies. He was one of the best in that aspect, and the key in taking it to the next level is to minimize the errors. Be that as it may, he’s convinced that he can play really well on this course which is, in the end, the most important point he’s walked away with this week.

The next goal is to rest this week to recover in order to go into the next tournament, the Fort Worth in Colonial, with the batteries charged, a course where he has always felt at ease and where he came very close to winning last year. The following tournament will be the US Open in Shinnecock Hills.

One up until Saturday, and the other on the third day of the tournament.

Rahm began the fifth major on the world calendar, star tournament of the PGA Tour held on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, with a fantastic round of 68 shots. Incredible start on one of the toughest courses of the year in the PGA Tour.

Jon moved to the top of the rankings right off the bat, and was able to maintain his position after the round on Friday. He shot par on a difficult day, with extremely firm greens and intermittent gusts of wind, distracting and difficult to read. The golfer from Barrika made it through the first ironclad barrier at Sawgrass. Once again, Rahm found himself going into the weekend in yet another tournament knee-deep in the fight for the win.

However, the tides turned radically on Saturday. Tough day, really took its toll on the Basque golfer. It was an uphill battle from the start and Sawgrass turned against him. Nothing was working out and the errors unfolded one after another. There was no stopping the downward spiral and he shot an 82 in the round, which knocked him out of the tournament. Jon didn’t make the second cut, established by the PGA Tour on Saturday when more than 78 golfers make the first cut on Friday. He made money and accumulated FedEX points, but didn’t manage to make it through to Sunday. It was his highest-scoring round since he became a professional. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had a round like that”, he assured still slightly shaken by the turn of events in the tournament.

Jon will have a week-long break now and will be back at it the following week in the Dean & DeLuca Invitational, PGA Tour tournament held in Texas.

Jon Rahm will play in THE PLAYERS Championship this Thursday. It will be the first time in his career that he’ll go up against the ‘fifth major’ and the first time he’ll set foot on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, one of the most legendary courses of the PGA Tour, the most emblematic corner being the par 3 on the 17th hole.

It’s all new to Rahm this year. Logical. It’s his first complete year in the PGA Tour. However, his capacity to adapt is so astonishing that anything could happen this week for Rahm.

The Sawgrass course has changed a lot since last year. The course has undergone a complete transformation, highly in Jon’s favor, without a doubt, a golfer with less experience on the PGA Tour courses. It showed last week. Wells Fargo was held on a different than usual course and he was in the fight for the win up until the very last shot.

Jon is ready for THE PLAYERS and arriving in great shape for the occasion. His performance last week in North Carolina says it all. The Sawgrass course is made for golfers who place the ball well. That’s not an issue for the golfer from Barrika either, one of the best last week from tee to green. Jon will play this Thursday starting at 1:30 pm local time (7:30 pm in Spain). It’s going to be a high profile game, reminiscent of the Ryder Cup. He’ll play with Martin Kaymer and Justin Rose. It’s a week to enjoy. One more on the list.

Jon Rahm has announced his schedule for upcoming tournaments on his official Twitter account @JonRahmpga. The Spanish golfer from Barrika disclosed the next five events he will attend, which are all the tournaments he will participate in, up until the US Open in Erin Hills (Wisconsin), second major of the season.

Rham will play in the Wells Fargo Championship next week, held on the Eagle Point Golf Club course in Wilmington, North Carolina. This course will substitute the headquarters where the tournament is usually held, because Quail Hollow is preparing for the PGA Championship in August.

Next week, Rham will play in the Wells Fargo, one of the biggest events of the season, apart from the majors. It’s the PLAYERS Championship, emblematic tournament of the PGA Tour held at the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. This will be the first year after major renovations that it will be held on this course.

After THE PLAYERS, Jon will take a week off, just before the next two tournaments: the DEAN & DELUCA Invitational, at the Colonial Country Club (Texas), and the Jack Nicklaus Memorial Tournament, in Muirfield Village (Ohio).

After those two tournaments, Rahm will rest again for one week, and then he’ll play in the US Open. This time around, the Spanish golfer prefers to go into it after a week’s break, the opposite of what he did before the Masters at Augusta. He played the two previous weeks and admitted that he was tired by the end of the week.

It’s his first year in the PGA Tour and he is learning and trying different things in order to figure out the best strategy to go into the big events of the season in the best possible state.
