From the opening 70 (-1) on Thursday, the Basque star managed Portrush’s shifting winds and tempo with composure. A 72 on Friday kept him safely in the tournament, and on moving day he posted 69 to return to red numbers before closing with another solid round (70) on Sunday. Final tally: -3, and encouraging feelings from a major that rewarded accuracy off the tee and precise flight control into the greens.

The championship was won by Scottie Scheffler at -17, in an edition that once again highlighted Portrush’s strategic difficulty and the need to keep the margin of error to a minimum. Harris English finished second at -13, while the cut fell at +1 after two rounds.
