Jon Rahm conquers the Memorial, and is now Number 1 in the World

Jon Rahm is getting stronger and stronger every time he steps up to the plate, and will go down in history in Spanish golf. The golfer from Barrika won the PGA Tour Memorial tournament this Sunday, held on the Muirfield Village Golf Club course in Ohio, and is now Number One in the world for the first time in his career.

Seve Ballesteros was the only Spanish golfer to reach such astounding heights before Jon, and it was more than 30 years ago.

Rahm achieved many things this Sunday. He won his fourth PGA Tour tournament (fifth if we include the Hero World Challenge which is not official) and his eleventh as a professional. He took home the title on Jack Nicklaus’ turf, which is something that always shows character. He won in very difficult conditions, with firm greens and fairways, the firmest in a very long time in the PGA Tour, with wind, rain…He took home the trophy after a final round of nine majestic holes. It couldn’t have been played much better than Rahm did on that stretch. Additionally, it’s the fourth season in which he’s won at least one PGA Tour tournament, only within reach of a select few. He hasn’t missed a year without a win since he went pro. Incredible.

Jon’s win in the memorial was a result of his extremely high level of play in all aspects of the game, the only way to win on such a demanding course as the Memorial. His long game was extraordinary, especially on the tee shots, his putt came out in full force, consistent, just like it was before, and his short game never fails to show up when he needs it the most.

Rahm finished out his victory with rounds of 69, 67, 68 and 75 shots. The round on Saturday was one of the best of his career, in very tough conditions, and playing like the star that he is. That’s what allowed him to start off on Sunday with a four-shot advantage, to which he added four more after a stellar performance on the front nine. It doesn’t get much better than that, pure concentration, and very sure of himself. He wanted to commit to his shots, and he passed with flying colors.

He went into the back nine holes with an eight-shot advantage, and he still had to suffer through the last nine holes to secure the victory. At the highest level, there are no freebies. Two bad holes (10th and 11th) made the rankings very tight with Ryan Palmer, although in reality, Jon was never less than three shots ahead, a solid lead.

The Spanish golfer cleared up any and all doubt with an unforgettable shot, one for the books. He made a sensational chip shot on the 16th hole for birdie, although afterwards, that birdie became a bogey due to a penalty (his ball moved slightly when he was preparing the shot). That fantastic approach was the icing on the cake to a tremendous victory, with the likes of a Major, or at least the perfect precursor to a Major, his next big objective after becoming Number One in the world.

The final scene on the 18th hole, greeted by Jack Nicklaus, tournament host, was the perfect ending to a fairy-tale week. Victory, Number One, and a blessing from one of golf’s biggest legends. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Jon Rahm misses the first cut of the season

None other than fifteen tournaments went by before Jon Rahm missed his first cut of the season in the PGA Tour season. The Spanish golfer did not manage to make it to the weekend in the Memorial Tournament after two rounds of 73 and 77 shots. It wasn’t Jon’s week, especially with the putter. Many opportunities escaped out from under his fingertips throughout the two rounds from between two and six meters away, a distance which Jon usually handles quite flawlessly. So many options lost turned into an exasperating situation, and he ended up with three consecutive bogeys to miss the cut definitively. An accident.

It’s important to note that after missing the second cut in THE PLAYERS, Rahm played in the Dean & DeLuca Invitational and he fought for the win up until the very last moment, and finished in second place. Jon’s next tournament will be the US Open Championship at Erin Hills next week. It goes without saying that an excellent comeback response can be expected from the Spanish golfer.

Despite having missed the cut, Jon is still among the top ten in the world and in fourth place in the FedEX Cup. He will be resting up this week and practicing in order to go into the US Open in the best possible shape, second major of the season.

The US Open is a legendary tournament that will always bring back good memories for Rahm, as it was the first he played in his career. He competed last year at Oakmont, when he was still an amateur, and came through with a spectacular performance. He finished in 23º place after making the cut with a spectacular birdie on the 17th hole and an outstanding par from the rough on the 18th hole for an agonizing finale.

Jon Rahm breaks in the top ten with Jack Nicklaus

Jon Rahm will play in the Memorial Tournament starting this Thursday, the Jack Nicklaus tournament of the PGA Tour held in Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. The Spanish golfer will make his lustrous debut as top ten in the world, which he earned this past Monday after the Dean & DeLuca Invitational, bumping him up to ninth place in the world rankings.

Rahm is now the fifth youngest in history to make it to the top ten. It couldn’t be a more exclusive club. The only ones ahead of Jon are none other than Sergio García, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods. This list clearly demonstrates that what the Basque golfer has accomplished is an incredible feat.

No better place to break in a freshly earned top ten than the Nicklaus tournament, one of the most exciting and special events on the PGA Tour calendar. Most importantly, apart from being a spectacular course, the Golden Bear comes alive during the tournament, it’s very active, present with all of the golfers and, above all, it’s become a tradition to shake hands with the winner on the green of the 18th hole on Sunday.

The Memorial will be the last tournament Rahm will play before the US Open. Afterward, he’ll rest for a week, and will then head for Erin Hills to compete in the second major of the season.

Jon will play starting on Thursday in one of the most explosive games of the day, it couldn’t be any other way after his track record this season. He’ll play with Rickie Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama on Thursday afternoon and in the morning on Friday.

Rahm announces his schedule up to the US Open

Jon Rahm has announced his schedule for upcoming tournaments on his official Twitter account @JonRahmpga. The Spanish golfer from Barrika disclosed the next five events he will attend, which are all the tournaments he will participate in, up until the US Open in Erin Hills (Wisconsin), second major of the season.

Rham will play in the Wells Fargo Championship next week, held on the Eagle Point Golf Club course in Wilmington, North Carolina. This course will substitute the headquarters where the tournament is usually held, because Quail Hollow is preparing for the PGA Championship in August.

Next week, Rham will play in the Wells Fargo, one of the biggest events of the season, apart from the majors. It’s the PLAYERS Championship, emblematic tournament of the PGA Tour held at the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. This will be the first year after major renovations that it will be held on this course.

After THE PLAYERS, Jon will take a week off, just before the next two tournaments: the DEAN & DELUCA Invitational, at the Colonial Country Club (Texas), and the Jack Nicklaus Memorial Tournament, in Muirfield Village (Ohio).

After those two tournaments, Rahm will rest again for one week, and then he’ll play in the US Open. This time around, the Spanish golfer prefers to go into it after a week’s break, the opposite of what he did before the Masters at Augusta. He played the two previous weeks and admitted that he was tired by the end of the week.

It’s his first year in the PGA Tour and he is learning and trying different things in order to figure out the best strategy to go into the big events of the season in the best possible state.
