Jon Rahm did not make the cut in the PGA Championship, held at Bethpage. A big disappointment for the Spanish golfer who couldn’t quite manage to find his sweet spot on the course. He had a lot of trouble with the drive on the fairway, and that’s a high price to pay on a course where the most important part is, precisely, to catch the fairway.
The course is really long from the rain and the rough is very unforgiving, so it’s either you place the ball in the fairway, or you can’t compete.
Rahm fought hard, as always. Even though it was an uphill battle, he gave it his best shot, he made a few important putts, and every time he placed the ball in the fairway, he managed to hit some solid shots. However, it wasn’t enough to outweigh the heavy burden of the drive. He ended up missing the cut by just one shot, which is still a positive point in and of itself. Even when his drive is at its worst in the whole year, he barely misses playing through the weekend by one shot.
“It’s no cause for alarm, nor time to panic. It was just a bad week with the drive. Just one. The only frustrating part is that it happened in one of the most important tournaments of the year, but it’s okay. Time to continue working, and things will turn out better in the next tournament. I don’t know what happened, but I was just uncomfortable the entire time, I didn’t get a good flow going with my swing, and it got to the point that I didn’t know what to do, nor where to aim”, Jon assured after the tournament.
Now, it’s time to wipe the slate clean and start fresh as quickly as possible in order to focus on the next tournament. Rahm will play in the Charles Schwab Cup at the Colonial, PGA Tour tournament. The next one after that will be the US Open.
