Jon Rahm is finishing off his third season in the PGA Tour with the complete rights to play, and for the third time he will begin the Playoffs with all options open to win the FedEx Cup. Three out of three. Spectacular.Jon will begin the Northern Trust on Thursday, first Playoff held on the Liberty Nation course in New York. The golfer from Barrika has already had two encounters with this tournament. In the two previous editions, he finished in third place in 2017 and missed the cut in 2018.
That being said, it’s important to note that this tournament is held on a different course every year in New York. In fact, it will be the first time that Jon plays at Liberty National. Last year it was held at Ridgewood, and two years ago at Glen Oaks.
Rahm will go into this first Playoff in tenth place in the FedEx. His main objective is to do well in the Northern Trust and in the BMW Championship, which is next week, in order to have the best chance at winning the FedEx in Atlanta.
No matter how things play out, he has a guaranteed spot in the grand finale at East Lake. The top 125 will play in the first Playoff, the top 70 in the second and the top 30 in the third. There have been some changes this year in the way the Grand Finale will be conducted in Atlanta. All golfers’ initial scores will be based on their FedEx Cup rankings. The leader will start off with a -10 up to the 30th place golfer who will start at par. Whoever wins the Tour Championship will also be the FedEx Champion. There will only be one grand champion this year as opposed to two, which has been the norm for the past two years.
