Jon Rahm left the PGA Tour last year as the best player of the regular season. Just a year later and in a new circuit, LIV Golf, the golfer from Barrika is again at the top of the individual ranking.
He has achieved it this week after finishing solo second in the tournament held at The Greenbrier, United States. In fact, Rahm was on the verge of winning his second consecutive tournament in LIV Golf after the victory achieved in the United Kingdom, an event that was held shortly after the Open Championship and that allowed him to inaugurate his palmares in the Saudi league.
Rahm has completed a splendid week in West Viriginia. He delivered three cards of 64, 62 and 65 strokes for a total of -19. He finished the tournament tied with Brooks Koepka. In fact, it was Jon who forced the playoff with two birdies on the last three holes.
However, on the first playoff hole, Rahm could not make par, despite his putt licking the edge of the hole, and ended up falling in front of Koepka. A magnificent duel reminiscent of the 2023 Augusta Masters, where the Spanish player did win with authority.
The disappointment of not winning the tournament was compensated at least with that first position in the ranking. He overtook Joaquín Niemann and will arrive at the last individual tournament of the year, to be played in September in Chicago, in command of operations. Let’s remember that the individual champion of LIV Golf receives an added bonus of 18 million dollars.
As for the team standings, Jon’s Legion XIIIs finished in third place and remain second, just half a point behind the Crushers. Their qualification for the team grand final is more than assured. Once there, they will have to win the tournament, which is played in match play format.
